I do not recommend dying animals.
A couple years ago a bunch of us were sitting around a big corner booth in Denny's in Arlington, VA. It was the morning before my little brother's college graduation, not that it matters, but I'm just setting the scene. It was a beautiful sunny spring day and I was without my husband and daughter for the first time. I felt a little disconnected, not that it matters again, I just remembered that strange feeling... Anyway, we were trying to entertain my two little nephews by drawing on the paper placemats and my mom remembered a psychology game she learned probably from one of the gazillion self-help books she's always buried in (which is funny in and of itself because she's a very willful person and the idea of some pointed-headed psych expert changing her perception of herself is just plain silly). It goes like this: first write down your favorite color and four things you like about it, and second write down your favorite animal and four things you like about it. Then, well, keep reading...
Mine went like this:
Blue: many interesting shades, comforting, beautiful in nature, deep
Chimpanzee: intelligent, mischievous, strong, cute
I just asked Madeleine and this is what she told me:
Purple: "I like it when people give me purple things like lost lego memories" (?) and "I like the colors that make it"
Horse: fun to ride and soft
Now I want you to tell me yours, then later today I'll reveal the terribly complex psychological analysis of your selection and response. And dammit! If you know already don't tell because that's not fun. And also if you don't like to comment, this is your big chance, because no fair writing them down on your Starbucks napkin in private!

- The color you choose and the adjectives you use to describe it represent how you see yourself.
- The animal you choose and the yadda yadda represent how others see you.
I was going to pick out the ones I liked the best from the comments but they're all funny and interesting. What do you think?

Red: looks good on me, reminds me of food, passionate, old-worldly
dog: soft, loyal, adorable, smart
Orange: cheers me up, vivid, makes me hungry, hard to overlook
Cat: elegant, discerning, self-sufficient, affectionate
Orange: fun, bright and not common.
Butterfly: quiet, intricate, beautiful.
Blue: Calm, peaceful, soothing, the color of the ocean
Big cats (as in tigers, cougars, etc): intelligent, suave, resourceful, steathy (is that a word?)
Green: color of life, natural, grounded, peaceful
Big cats: intelligent, bursts of energy, restful at times, cute cubs
Albeit, mine is certainly not original, but here it goes:
Blue: Clear skys and calm ocean, relaxed
Horeses: Beatuiful, proud and unpredictable,
Blue: soothing, tranquil, like sky, like water

orange: bright, warm, sunny, cheerful
bird: free, flight, fast, colorful
tink, I just asked her and she said, "Mommy don't ask me these things."
Color: My color changes often, but right now I'm in a green phase. It's fresh, can be energetic or calm, and clean.
Animal: Monkeys. Mischevious, funny, intelligent, and cute.

This was fun until it was revealed that other people appreciate my brazen ability to lick my privates in public. Maybe that translates to a much nicer "lack of shame".

Okay, I didn't look closely at your explanation of how it works, Mignon, so I can still play, right?
My favorite color is...what is it? Let's go with blue and/or green, because they're the color(s) of Lake Michigan, the sky, clothes that look nice on me, and clothes that look nice on my fellas.
My favorite animal is...what is it? What the hell. Let's say a bird, because it can fly, it can sing, it can fly, and it can fly.
Orange - Bright, dynamic, cheerful, also a delicious fruit
Dolphin - intelligent, friendly, graceful, playful
I see myself as clothes and nature. And other people see me as someone who flies (hey, I don't care who knows that my favorite dreams are those rare ones where I can fly) and can sing...but I totally can't sing.
I broke the test.
When I've played this game before, there's a third question: your favorite body of water (or form water comes in) and three reasons why. Of course, as Maude Lebowski famously quipped, "You can imagine where it goes from here."
